Russia's Ilya Gringolts plays Stravinsky's Violin Concerto. Hannu Lintu also conducts Sibelius' Second Symphony as well as a symphony Otto Ketting wrote for the Matinee fifteen years ago.
Otto Ketting's Fourth Symphony
Otto Ketting was one of Holland's most accomplished and versatile composers, with a body of work that includes six symphonies, operas and film music. He maintained close ties with the Matinee - it began in 1964 with the first performance of his Variazioni for winds by the Radio Kamerorkest. Of his symphonies, the Third, Fourth and Sixth were Matinee commissions for the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. With this concert, the Matinee commemorates Kettings's death on Dec. 13, 2012, now ten years ago, with a performance of his Fourth Symphony for strings, brass and percussion.
Stravinsky and Sibelius
Ketting inherited his penchant for clear structures from his father, the composer Piet Ketting. With his First Symphony under his arm, he reported to Karl Amadeus Hartmann in Munich, who assured him he had nothing more to teach him. Otto Ketting was not only a composer, he also conducted (preferably unknown works) and was an inspired writer about music. Finnish conductor Hannu Lintu combines Ketting with two of his favorite composers, Jean Sibelius and Igor Stravinsky.
