Mendelssohn's Scottish Symphony

Programme

  • Gustav Mahler Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen
  • Felix Mendelssohn Third symphony 'Scottish'

Nuno Coehlo whips up the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in Mendelssohn's evocative 'Scottish' symphony. Mezzo-soprano Catriona Morison sings Mahler's melancholic Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen about a lost love.

Mendelssohn's Scottish Symphony
Mendelssohn composed his 'Scottish' symphony after a trip through England and Scotland. It is a very evocative series of tableaux vivants on the rugged Scottish Highlands. Mendelssohn knows how to bring a bygone era to life: you can hear the clash of arms of knights and see the mud of the horses' hooves flying through the air! In addition to Mendelssohn's energetic symphony, mezzo-soprano Catriona Morison sings Mahler's melancholy Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen about a lost love.

Edo de Waart had to cancel the concert
Edo de Waart is a living legend. He began his long conducting career as assistant conductor to Leonard Bernstein with the New York Philharmonic, after which he was chief conductor of the orchestras of San Francisco, Minnesota, Sydney, Hong Kong, Antwerp and Milwaukee for no less than 16 years as chief conductor of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra between his time as chief conductor of the orchestra. He has now been an honorary conductor of that orchestra for almost twenty years. And it's still magic, every time De Waart stands in front of 'his Radio Fil'.
