Beethoven's Mass in C
Programme
- Igor Stravinsky Chant funèbre
- Béla Bartók Cantata profana
- Ludwig van Beethoven Mass in C
On Good Friday, chief conductor Karina Canellakis leads four soloists and both broadcasting ensembles in a particularly fine programme. To begin with, a rarely performed work by Igor Stravinsky, intended for the funeral (in 1908) of his eminent, former teacher Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, which, according to the composer himself, is the best work written before The Firebird. Also rarely performed is the Cantata profana by Béla Bartók, a choral work based on a Romanian folk ballad. Finally, an underexposed side of Ludwig van Beethoven, namely one of his few religious works, the Mass in C, always overshadowed by the imposing Missa solemnis. But is that right?
