Wilson Ng assistant conductor of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra

The Edo de Waart Assistant Conductorship has been awarded to Wilson Ng this season. Wilson Ng's appointment is special; it is the first time an assistant conductor has been chosen through an audition.

Wilson Ng, described by Tatler Asia as "one of the world's most renowned young conductors," has been appointed assistant conductor of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. This internationally acclaimed conductor, born in Hong Kong and educated in Europe, and is, among other things, the first guest conductor of the Hankyung Arte Philharmonic. In addition to his artistic achievements, he is committed to music education and creative concert experiences.

Wilson won prizes at the Mahler Competition in Bamberg, the Sir Georg Solti Competition in Frankfurt and the Svetlanov Competition in Paris, among others. In 2018, he was appointed Associate Conductor of the Seoul Philharmonic, making him the youngest conductor ever to be appointed by the orchestra at the age of 28. He is also a sought-after guest conductor with other prominent Korean ensembles, including the KBS Symphony Orchestra and the Korean National Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to his appointment as Edo de Waart Assistant Conductor with the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Wilson also recently received a Conducting Fellowship with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He will perform with these orchestras in prestigious venues such as the Royal Festival Hall and the Royal Concertgebouw.

Recent highlights include appearances with the hr-Sinfonieorchester (Frankfurt), the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker, the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, the Beijing NCPA Orchestra, the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra, the Tongyeong Festival Orchestra and the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, with whom he recorded with mandolin player Julien Martineau for the French label Naïve. Other renowned artists with whom he has collaborated include Viktoria Mullova, Sumi Jo, Víkingur Ólafsson, Bruce Liu, Esther Yoo and Yunchan Lim.

 

Edo de Waart Assistant Conductorship

For this appointment, Wilson Ng has been awarded the Edo de Waart Assistant Conductorship. The assistant conductorship was dedicated by the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra to honorary conductor Edo de Waart on his 80th birthday in April 2021. He began the tradition of appointing assistant conductors when he was principal conductor of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra.

Wilson Ng will support Karina Canellakis, principal conductor of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, and several other conductors in various productions.
