Last summer, Russian pianist Yulianna Avdeeva made her debut with a Chopin recital at the Concertgebouw. Now she performs Rachmaninoff’s virtuosicPaganini Variations. Tianyi Lu conducts the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in Rimsky-Korsakov’s enchanting symphonic poem*Scheherazade*.
Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade
WithScheherazade, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov composed one of the most beloved orchestral works of the nineteenth century, inspired by the Arabian tales from*One Thousand and One Nights*. The exotic stories come to life, as do the wicked sultan and the clever Scheherazade. Thanks to her storytelling skills, the princess manages to repeatedly postpone her announced doom, set to music by a recurring violin solo performed by the concertmaster.
Rachmaninoff’s Paganini Variations
Since winning the prestigious 2010 Chopin Competition in Warsaw, the expressive pianist Yulianna Avdeeva has been making a sensation on the international stage. She performs worldwide in prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York and the Konzerthaus in Vienna, and the press praises her fiery temperament and virtuosity. Her CD recordings are regularly honored; last year, for example, she won the 2025 Diapason d’Or for the albumVoyage-Chopin. This summer, Yulianna Avdeeva returns to the Concertgebouw with Rachmaninoff’s challengingRhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.
