Severin von Eckardstein plays Prokofiev 3
Programme
- Richard Wagner Overture Tannhäuser
- Sergei Prokofiev Third piano concerto
- Max Reger Vier Tondichtungen nach Arnold Böcklin
This concert presents impressive pages from Russian musical history. Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto is among the best-known and best-loved of his five keyboard concertos. The work took its final form in the years 1917-21, but most of the inventions Prokofiev collected years earlier. The Third Piano Concerto - alternately rhythmically rousing, lyrical and colorful - is right up pianist Severin von Eckardstein's alley. He performs in place of Alexander Gavrylyuk, who has had to cancel his performances this week. After intermission, four "tone poems" after paintings by Swiss Arnold Böcklin by theme composer Max Reger, born the same year as Rachmaninov.
