Clear arcs and a palpable pulse
Samy Moussa’s residency this season begins with the Dutch premiere of hisFlute Concerto, composed in part on commission from the ZaterdagMatinee. A richly varied, virtuosic work in which soloist Emmanuel Pahud is the driving force behind a broad, expansive orchestral sound. The flutist balances between acrobatic runs and long, lyrical lines, between chamber music intimacy and a head-on confrontation with the full orchestra. Samy Moussa studied in his hometown of Montréal and continued his education in Europe. You can hear that. His works are both lyrical and monumental, with a North American directness grounded in European orchestral traditions.
Nielsen &Brahms
Carl Nielsen’s*Helios*is an ode to the Greek sun. And Brahms’sFirst Symphony(also known as “Beethoven’s Tenth”), after fourteen years of writing and rewriting, paved the way for the many orchestral works Brahms went on to compose.
