Granada in the summer, brought to life by Thomas Beijer and the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. A balmy breeze, the scent of orange trees, and in the distance, the sounds of a flamenco fiesta. With De Falla, the musicians seek out the sunlight, while with Jan-Peter de Graaff’s notes, they head into the pub. Van Gogh’s*Le café de nuit*served as a source of inspiration.

Spanish Gardens
It’s a curious story behind De Falla’s*Noches en los jardines de España*. The composer had never been to Granada, but while in Paris he came across a booklet about the Spanish gardens of Granada filled with tales of the king’s harem. It provided enough inspiration for a nocturne for piano and orchestra that is sure to make many blush.

Joy and Danger
Dutch composer Jan-Peter de Graaff drew inspiration for his*Café de nuit*from Vincent van Gogh’s painting of the same name. The café as a place where the darkest side of human behavior comes to the surface. “In this work, I tried to find a strange balance between joy and danger, between alertness—or even panic—and drunkenness, between passion and truth,” said the composer.
