Oriental Sounds by Sheherazade & Darvishi

Programme

  • Aftab Darvishi In Absence (world premiere)
  • Witold Lutosławski Cello Concerto
  • Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade

This program features no fewer than two cello concertos and two phenomenal cellists, and concludes with the spellbinding sounds of Rimsky-Korsakov’sScheherazade.

Two cello concertos…
This concert with an Eastern flair opens with the world premiere of acello concertoby the young Iranian composer Aftab Darvishi. After studying piano in her hometown of Tehran, she studied composition in Amsterdam and The Hague. Her work is on the music stand of the Austrian-Iranian cellist Kian Soltani. With him, the authentic Iranian elements with which Aftab spices her music are in good hands. Fellow cellist Nicolas Altstaedt, who is German-French, will then perform theCello Concertoby the Polish composer Witold Lutosławski. Lutosławski dedicated this work to the Russian master cellist Rostropovich. It is a fascinating composition that opens with a cadenza for solo cello lasting several minutes.

…and a fairy tale
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov composed the beloved orchestral suite*Scheherazade*, inspired by the famous*Tales of the Thousand and One Nights*. A frame story with Arabic and Egyptian elements. Just as Scheherazade enchants the sultan with her stories, so Rimsky-Korsakov captivates the listener with oriental atmospheres.
