Liza Ferschtman and Ivan Karizna: Brahms double concerto
Programme
- Sergei Prokofiev First symphony 'Classical'
- Johannes Brahms Concert for violin, cello and orchestra
- Kurt Weill Symphony no.2 (1933)
Johannes Brahms' double concerto requires two seasoned soloists who are superbly matched. Violinist Liza Ferschtman and cellist Ivan Karizna meet all the requirements. A fine counterpart to Brahms' romanticism are two tantalizing twentieth-century symphonies by Prokofiev and Weill.
Make up
Brahms' Double Concerto for violin and cello is proof that Clara Schumann was not always right. She was not enthusiastic and considered it "not brilliantly written for the solo instruments. It was only later that people recognized the humor and symphonic quality of the work Brahms wrote to make up for his troubled relationship with violin grandmaster Joseph Joachim.
Liza Ferschtman
Liza Ferschtman needs no introduction. The vedette from the Dutch violin school has more than earned her spurs as a soloist and in chamber music. Ferschtman and French cellist Ivan Karizna have known each other for years and are in tune with each other in every possible way. The dream duo for an overwhelming Brahms.
