Light on Skrjabin

Programme

  • Jean Sibelius Night ride and sunrise
  • Alexander Skrjabin Prométhée, le poème du feu
  • Sergei Prokofiev Alexander Nevsky

This concert focuses on two memorable Russian masterpieces. Prokofiev's cantata Alexander Nevsky is based on film music he originally wrote for Sergei Eisenstein's masterpiece of the same name. On the eve of the Second World War, Prokofiev dealt with a historically charged subject: how, in 1242, the Russian hero Alexander Nevsky expelled the invaders of the Teutonic Order. Stand up, free and brave people, defend your beautiful homeland'. A highlight in Alexander Skrjabin's oeuvre is his grand symphonic work entitled Prometheus [or] the Fire Poem. In it he wanted to bring together all the arts. He also had a light organ in mind, which translates chords into colours. And that special visual element is added during this concert!
