Karina Canellakis and Radio Philharmonic Orchestra: Mahler's Symphony No. 1
Programme
- philharmonie zuidnederland
Mahler's poetic First Symphony celebrates life and nature, which awakens after a long winter. The 'brilliant' Karina Canellakis, according to international critics, leads her Radio Philharmonic Orchestra.
Gustav Mahler
Mahler takes the listener outside in his First Symphony. In the first movement, 'nature awakens after a long winter'. The sunlight peeps through the trees, a cuckoo can be heard. The entire First Symphony seems to celebrate life - even that inevitable side of it: death. For the third movement, Mahler was inspired by a painting in which forest animals carry a dead hunter to his grave. They are not really sad
Karina Canellakis
'No conductor could ask for more', says Karina Canellakis about the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. It was mutual love at first sight, and since 2019 it is officially 'on'. When she became principal, the American Canellakis had a nice wish list of composers. She hoped for Mahler, among others, she told NOS. Today, she will conduct his poetic First Symphony.
