Haydn's Harmoniemesse
Programme
- Joseph Haydn Harmoniemesse
- Frank Martin In terra pax
Performing masses by Joseph Haydn is a regular tradition in Austria and Germany, but rather rare in the Netherlands. Our image of Haydn is rather that of a composer of string quartets, symphonies, piano sonatas and Die Schöpfung. Nevertheless, half of Haydn's oeuvre consists of vocal music, most of it spiritual. It is therefore a great opportunity to hear Haydn's last mass, his Harmoniemesse from 1802, the work of a man of seventy. This programme also includes the poignant call for peace on earth that Swiss-Dutch composer Frank Martin premiered in 1945: In terra pax.
