Soon Joey Roukens will be part of the iron repertoire, at least in Utrecht, where audiences have already had the privilege of enjoying his greatest gestures for choir and orchestra on several occasions. So too in We are sojourners. According to the young composer, it is "shamelessly tonal," with effects that evoke the late Romanticism of Sibelius and Mahler, including a huge (dissonant) climax and a dissolution into nothingness. More traditionally minded? Then there's Beethoven's Mass in C, the smaller brother of the colossal Missa Solemnis.
A commissioned work by Prince Nikolaus von Esterházy, to celebrate his wife's name day with it. The mass is in the key of C major, for Beethoven the key of tranquility and enlightenment.
