James Gaffigan conducts the 'Unvollendete
Franz Schubert moves me to tears,' James Gaffigan said in an interview. Today he is conducting the Eighth Symphony, better known as the 'Unvollendete'. After all, Schubert only completed two movements of this large-scale work. Was there more to come? We will never know, but his Eighth Symphony contains everything that made Schubert so great. Mystery, passion, desire, darkness and lyricism.
Mozart and Van Gilse
The Groot Omroepkoor sings Mozart's beautiful Kyrie - another work that was perhaps waiting to be expanded, but perhaps not. Gaffigan will conduct Jan van Gilse's cantata Der Kreis des Lebens. The later resistance fighter wrote this work while living in Berlin. The texts are by the poet Rilke and deal with life, death and the search for meaning.
